If you have never been to Turkey before, it's hard to explain the real beauty
of the country, the depth of its culture and the friendliness of its people.
It's the perfect place for a holiday but the reality of this sometimes gets lost in
concerns over the current state of the world we live in. At the end of the day,
it up to you to decide but the most frequent questions people raise concern
terrorism and the muslim faith.
It is true that there have been some attacks against Western, particularly
British, interests in Turkey but it is important to remember that these have
taken place in Istanbul or Ankara which is a long way from Turunç. It's
a bit like living in the UK and seeing the trouble that has taken place in
Northern Ireland or even some areas of Spain - distances are comparable.
Then there is the general misconception about the Muslim faith. The main
religion in Turkey is Muslim but Turkey is a secular state and the principal
of tolerance is written into its constitution. Remember also that the Muslim
faith (as practiced by millions of Muslims, not the few who use its
teachings for their own ends) preaches peace and tolerance. Its core
teachings concern living in peace, helping others and practicing tolerance.
Finally, remember that Turkey is not only a long standing ally of the West
and a member of NATO but also now involved in talks which will almost
certainly result in its accession to the European Union.
